How to Choose a Portable Power Station — Buying Guide

A portable power station is a battery, inverter, and charger in one box: charge it from a wall outlet, your vehicle, or solar panels, and run anything from a CPAP or laptop to a refrigerator or power tools. They are the simplest form of backup and off-grid power — no fuel, no fumes, no installation.

Choosing well comes down to two numbers on every product page: capacity in watt-hours (how long it runs things) and output in watts (what it can run at all).

  • Size capacity in watt-hours against your real loads: appliance watts x hours of use, plus about 15% for conversion losses.
  • Check continuous output AND surge rating. Motors, pumps, and compressors can draw several times their running watts at startup.
  • LiFePO4 (LFP) models are heavier but rated for far more charge cycles than older lithium chemistries — worth it for daily use.
  • Solar input watts decide recharge speed. A large battery with a small solar input can take all day to refill.
  • Expandable models let you add extra batteries later instead of replacing the whole unit.

How long will a power station run my refrigerator?

A typical refrigerator averages roughly 100-200 watts over the day because its compressor cycles on and off. As an example, a 2,000 Wh station running a fridge that averages 150 watts lasts around 11 hours after conversion losses. Check the capacity on the product page and divide by your appliance's average draw for your own estimate.

Can a power station run a well pump or an air conditioner?

Only if its continuous and surge ratings cover the appliance's startup draw, which is the number that trips most people up. Check the appliance's nameplate or locked-rotor amps, compare them with the station's surge rating on its product page, and size up if it is close.

How fast can I recharge a power station with solar panels?

Roughly the battery capacity divided by the real output of your panels: a 2,000 Wh station behind 400 watts of panels in full sun refills in about 5-6 hours. Real panel output is usually 70-80% of the nameplate rating, and the station's maximum solar input caps how many panels it can accept.
