How to Choose a Solar Inverter — Buying Guide

The inverter is the brain of a solar system: it turns battery and panel DC power into the AC power your home runs on, manages charging, and decides what happens when the grid goes down. The inverters here span hybrid whole-home units, dedicated off-grid models, and grid-tie equipment.

Three decisions drive the choice: how you will use it (backup, off-grid, or grid-tie), how much power you need at once, and whether you need split-phase 120/240V output for a US home.

  • Hybrid inverters blend solar, battery, and grid or generator power and keep essential loads running in an outage. Pure off-grid inverters never export to the grid; grid-tie setups require utility approval.
  • Size continuous output to everything you might run at once, and surge capacity to your biggest motor start — pumps and compressors decide this number.
  • 48V battery banks are the standard for whole-home systems. Match the inverter's battery voltage to your batteries.
  • Split-phase 120/240V output is what most US homes need for well pumps, dryers, ranges, and central AC.
  • Count the MPPT inputs if your roof faces two directions or you plan a second array later.

What is the difference between a hybrid inverter and an off-grid inverter?

A hybrid inverter can work with the grid — charging batteries from it, running loads from solar first, and backing up essential circuits when the grid fails — and many can also run fully off-grid. An off-grid inverter is built only for systems with no grid connection and cannot export power or blend grid power.

What size inverter do I need for a house?

Add up the watts of everything likely to run at the same time, then leave headroom for motor starting surges. Most whole-home backup systems land between 8 kW and 15 kW of continuous output; a small cabin running lights, a fridge, and electronics can need far less. Each product page lists continuous and surge ratings.

Can I connect two inverters together for more power?

Many of the whole-home models here support parallel operation, stacking units for higher output or for true split-phase service. Parallel capability, and how many units can stack, is model-specific — it is listed on each product page.
