Roof Tents

Rooftop tents turn your vehicle into the campsite: they mount to a roof rack or bed rack, fold open in minutes, and keep you off the ground with a real mattress. This collection covers rooftop tents plus the awnings and annexes that complete a camp setup.

The fit check that matters is your roof system: the tent's weight has to sit within your rack's dynamic load rating while driving, and the rack and roof have to support the tent plus occupants when parked.

• Check your rack's dynamic (driving) load rating against the tent's weight first — that is the number most often missed.
• Static capacity when parked is much higher than dynamic, because the load spreads through the rack; still confirm your vehicle's roof rating.
• Compare sleeping footprint and mattress thickness, not just the headline person count, which assumes narrow shoulders.
• Hard-shell tents set up fastest and carry a slimmer driving profile; soft-shell tents usually sleep more for the weight.
• Plan for annexes and awnings: shade and a changing room transform how livable the setup is on multi-day trips.

It fits if your roof rack or bed rack is rated for the tent's weight while driving (dynamic rating) and your roof can carry the tent plus sleepers while parked. Both ratings are in your vehicle and rack documentation; each tent's weight is on its product page.

Most fold-open designs pitch in a few minutes: release the latches or straps, unfold or raise the shell, and extend the ladder. Hard-shell models are typically the fastest; adding an annex or awning takes longer.

Many models close with sleeping bags or bedding inside, which is a big part of their convenience. Thick pillows and bulky blankets depend on the model's closed height, so check the product page for its internal clearance.
