Is this a solar inverter?
No, and this is the most important thing to get right before ordering. This is a low-frequency inverter-charger: it converts battery power to AC, and it charges the battery from an AC source such as shore power or a generator. It has no solar input and no MPPT charge controller. If you want to charge from solar panels, you need either a separate charge controller alongside this, or one of SunGoldPower's SPH or SGN series solar inverters instead.
Why is a low-frequency inverter better for motors?
Because the transformer inside it can deliver a very large surge for a short period — three times its continuous rating for twenty seconds here. Motors, compressors, pumps and power tools all draw far more current starting than running, and a high-frequency inverter of the same continuous rating will often trip trying to start them. The trade-off is weight and idle consumption: a transformer is heavy, and it draws power just sitting there.
Why do you recommend 24V so strongly at this size?
Current. 4000W at 12V is over 330A, which needs cable in the region of 4/0 even for a short run, plus fusing and terminals rated for it. At 24V it's about 165A, which is far more manageable. The extra cost of heavy cable frequently exceeds any saving from reusing a 12V bank.
What will 4000W run?
A deep well pump, a full-size air conditioner, an electric water heater element, a workshop full of tools, or a house's essential circuits together. With 12,000W of surge there is very little that will refuse to start.
Can it produce 240V?
This model produces either 120V at 60Hz or 230V at 50Hz, switch-selectable — it is not a split-phase 120/240V unit. SunGoldPower does make a 4000W 48V split-phase version, and their SPH and SGN series produce true 120/240V split phase. Call us at (303) 876-7654 if 240V is what you need.
Is there any solar capability at all?
No. This is an inverter-charger only. Add an external MPPT charge controller if you want solar, or choose an all-in-one solar inverter from the SPH or SGN series.
What does the 30-day return period cover?

Do I need a licensed electrician?
For anything that connects to your home's electrical service, yes — that is permitted, inspected work in every US jurisdiction.
