Why buy a native 48V battery instead of four 12V batteries in series?
Series strings need the batteries to stay balanced with one another, and each has its own BMS with no visibility of the others. A native 48V battery has one BMS managing all sixteen cells directly, which is simpler, safer and removes three interconnects and a lot of installation work. The trade-off is that you can't reconfigure it for 12V use later.
How does this compare with a server-rack 48V battery?
Similar energy — 5.12kWh either way — but very different packaging. This is an IP67-sealed Group 8D case built for marine and mobile use, with Victron CANbus and self-heating down to −22°F. A server-rack battery is IP20, designed to slot into a cabinet indoors, and typically cheaper per kWh. Buy this one if the battery has to survive weather; buy the rack if it lives in a utility room.
How many can I connect together?
Up to sixteen in parallel, which is 1,600Ah or nearly 82kWh. All sixteen appear on one app dashboard and communicate as a single bank to a Victron GX device.
Is 150A of discharge enough for my inverter?
150A continuous at 51.2V is roughly 7,680W of DC output, so a single battery supports an inverter of around 6kW allowing for conversion losses. If your inverter is bigger than that, or you want surge headroom, you need more than one battery in parallel. Tell us the inverter on (303) 876-7654 and we'll check it.
Can I use it with a Sol-Ark, EG4 or other 48V inverter?
It's a standard 51.2V LFP battery with CANbus communication, so it works electrically with the common 48V hybrid inverters. Communication protocol support varies by inverter, though — Victron is explicitly supported, others may need configuration. Call us with your inverter model and we'll tell you honestly what to expect.
Does the self-heating matter for an indoor installation?
Less so — if the battery lives in a heated space it never needs to heat itself. It matters if the battery is in an unheated garage, a shed, a boat or an RV, where an unheated lithium battery would refuse to charge for months of the year.
Why lithium iron phosphate rather than another lithium chemistry?
LFP trades a little energy density for a great deal of safety and service life. It doesn't have the thermal runaway behaviour nickel-based lithium chemistries can exhibit, it tolerates sitting at a high state of charge, and it lasts thousands of cycles rather than hundreds. For a battery in a boat, an RV or a house, those are the properties that matter.
Do I need a lithium-specific charger?
Yes. A lead-acid charger's absorption and float voltages are wrong for LFP — it will either leave the battery short of full or hold it at a voltage that shortens its life. Any charger with a LiFePO4 profile works; we stock Epoch's own matched chargers in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V.
What charge settings should I use?
Epoch specifies absorption at 56.8V for a minimum of fifteen minutes per battery, float at 54.0V, equalisation off and temperature compensation disabled. Getting these right matters — a lead-acid profile will either undercharge the battery or hold it at a damaging voltage.
