Anker SOLIX MI80S Microinverter: 640 VA of Module-Level Conversion at Under 60 VDC

A microinverter converts DC to AC at each panel rather than sending high-voltage DC down to a single string inverter. The practical result is that one shaded or underperforming panel no longer drags the rest of the array down with it, and one failure does not take the whole system offline. The MI80S handles two modules on independent MPPTs and delivers up to 640 VA of continuous AC output at 240 V.

The safety argument is the one installers care about. String inverters run at 300 to 1,000 VDC on the roof. The MI80S operates under 60 VDC, which changes the shock and arc-fault picture considerably. Add a die-cast aluminium housing rated NEMA 6 that holds full output from -40 F to 149 F, and you have a unit designed to sit on a roof for a decade without attention.

Why Module-Level Conversion

Two Independent MPPTs

Each input tracks its own maximum power point, so panels at different tilts, orientations or string lengths all run at their own optimum. A string inverter has one MPPT for everything.

Under 60 VDC on the Roof

Between 300 and 1,000 VDC lower than a string inverter. That is the difference between a rooftop DC circuit that is genuinely hazardous and one that is not.

One Failure Is One Panel

If a microinverter fails you lose that pair of modules, not the array. With a string inverter, a single failure takes the entire system down until someone shows up.

Powder-coated die-cast aluminium dissipates heat far better than the plastic housings common at this price, which is what allows rated output across the whole temperature range rather than derating in summer.

Choose the MI80L if your modules are large enough that 640 VA would clip output on a good day, and accept five units per branch instead of six. What is the difference between the MI80S and the MI80L?
Output capacity, and that is essentially it. The MI80S delivers 640 VA and the MI80L delivers 768 VA. The larger unit accepts more input current, 18 A per input against 16 A, and fits five to a 12 AWG branch instead of six. Housing, weight, NEMA rating, temperature range and the ten-year warranty are identical.
Which one do I need for my panels?
Work from your module's rated output and short circuit current. If your panels would regularly produce more than 640 W each, the MI80S will clip that surplus and the MI80L is the better economic choice. Below that, the MI80S costs less and gives you an extra unit per branch. Call us at (303) 876-7654 with your panel model and we will check it against the input limits.
How many can I put on one circuit?
Six MI80S units on a 12 AWG branch protected by a 20 A breaker. The MI80L is five per branch because of its higher output current. Anker rates the platform for PV systems up to 20 kW total.
Why is low DC voltage such a big deal?
A string inverter collects DC from many panels in series, which puts 300 to 1,000 VDC on your roof whenever the sun is up. That voltage is present in the conductors whether or not the inverter is running, and it is a real arc-fault and shock hazard for anyone working on the roof, including firefighters. Microinverters convert at the module, so the rooftop DC circuit stays under 60 V.
What happens if one microinverter fails?
You lose the two modules connected to it and the rest of the array keeps producing. The app will show you exactly which unit stopped reporting, so the diagnosis is immediate rather than a service call to find out. A string inverter failure stops everything.
Can I mix these with panels at different angles?
That is one of the main reasons to use them. Because each MPPT operates independently, you can put modules on a south face and a west face, at different tilts, and each will find its own optimum. A single-MPPT string inverter forces the whole array to a compromise operating point.
Will it survive a Colorado winter and a Colorado summer?
Anker rates full output from -40 F to 149 F, with storage down to -40 F and up to 185 F. The die-cast aluminium body is doing the work there; plastic-housed units commonly derate at the top of that range. The enclosure is NEMA 6 against rain and dust.
Does it work during a power outage?
Grid-tied microinverters shut down during an outage by design and by code, unless paired with storage that provides a reference. Anker states that its microinverters use frequency shifting and algorithmic control to keep PV available when paired with Anker SOLIX energy storage, which is the usual arrangement. On their own, they stop when the grid stops.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes. This is a rooftop PV installation tying into your service, which means design, permitting, inspection and usually utility interconnection paperwork. The microinverter makes the DC side much safer to work around; it does not make the job a DIY project.
What is the warranty?
Ten years standard from Anker on the microinverter itself. Note that the 25 and 30 year performance figures Anker publishes alongside these units refer to PERC and IBC solar module output, not to the microinverter.
