Is one 460Ah battery better than four 100Ah batteries?
Usually, yes. One battery means one BMS, one set of terminals, no interconnect cables to fail and no risk of one weak battery dragging the bank down. It also takes less space overall. The argument for several smaller batteries is that they're easier to carry into position and easier to distribute across awkward compartments. At 84 lbs this one needs two people or a strap.
How does it differ from the Elite Series 460Ah?
Same capacity — 5,888Wh either way. The Elite adds IP67 sealing, 230A rather than 200A continuous discharge, 1,300A of peak for cranking, CANbus with Victron integration, and a mountable gauge and switch in the box. This one has IP54 sealing, Bluetooth only, and a lower price. If it lives in a dry RV compartment, the Essential is the sensible buy.
What does 5.89kWh run in an RV or van?
A compressor fridge, LED lighting, water pump, fans, laptops and phone charging for two to three days with no input at all. Through a 2,000W inverter, roughly 4.5 to 5kWh of AC after losses — a coffee maker, an induction hob in bursts, a microwave, a TV. Call us at (303) 876-7654 with your loads and we'll be specific.
Will it fit where my existing batteries are?
It's 20.55 by 9.45 by 8.6 inches, which is roughly a Group 8D footprint but shorter than many 8D cases. Measure your compartment carefully, particularly the height with cables attached. We're happy to check the fit with you before you order.
What does the IP54 rating mean for where I can install it?
IP54 is dust-protected and splash-resistant — fine for an RV compartment, a garage, a van conversion or a sheltered locker. It is not rated for submersion or for standing water. If the battery will live somewhere that can genuinely get wet, like a boat bilge or an open deck locker, Epoch's Elite and Pro Series batteries are IP67 and that is the specification to buy.
Can I charge it from my vehicle's alternator?
Yes, through a DC-DC charger — not directly from the alternator, which can't regulate properly for lithium and risks damaging both the battery and the alternator. A 40A or 60A DC-DC charger is the usual choice for a bank this size. We can spec one for your vehicle.
Why lithium iron phosphate rather than lead-acid?
Three reasons that matter in practice. You can use nearly all of the rated capacity rather than half, so a 100Ah LFP battery does the work of a 200Ah lead-acid one. It weighs roughly a third as much for the same usable energy. And it lasts thousands of cycles instead of a few hundred, so cost per cycle is dramatically lower despite the higher purchase price.
Do I need a lithium-specific charger?
Yes. A lead-acid charger's absorption and float voltages are wrong for LFP — it will either leave the battery short of full or hold it at a voltage that shortens its life. Any charger with a LiFePO4 profile works, and we stock Epoch's own matched chargers in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V.
How many can I connect together?
Up to four in series for 48V, or four in parallel for 1,840Ah at 12V — a maximum 4S4P configuration. Four in parallel is 23.5kWh, which is a very substantial mobile system.
