How to Choose a Solar Kit — Buying Guide

A solar kit bundles the core of a power system — panels, inverter, and battery storage — with components chosen to work together, so you are not piecing together parts and hoping they are compatible. Kits on this page range from small cabin and RV systems to whole-home off-grid and backup systems.

The right kit is the one sized to your actual daily energy use, with enough battery to carry your essential loads through the night and enough inverter capacity for your biggest loads to start and run.

  • Start from your daily energy use in kWh (your utility bill or an appliance-by-appliance audit). Kit sizing flows from that number, not from roof size.
  • Match battery storage to your nights and cloudy days, not just your panels: panels make power, batteries decide how much of it you keep.
  • Check the inverter's continuous and surge ratings against your hardest loads — well pumps, air conditioners, and power tools all spike at startup.
  • Decide roof vs. ground mount early. Racking, wire runs, and permitting differ, and not every kit includes mounting hardware.
  • Leave room to expand. An inverter and battery platform that can grow later beats replacing components in two years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size solar kit I need?

Add up the electricity you use in a day, in kilowatt-hours. Divide that by your area's average peak sun hours to get a starting array size in kW, then size the battery bank around the loads you need to run after dark. A home using 30 kWh a day in a 5-peak-sun-hour area starts around a 6 kW array, for example. Every kit page lists its panel wattage, inverter output, and battery capacity so you can check the math.

What comes in a solar kit, and what might I still need?

Most kits include panels, an inverter, batteries, and the cabling to connect them; some add charge controllers or mounting hardware and some do not, so check the kit's own product page for its exact contents. Racking, disconnects, and permitting are site-specific and are the most common extras.

Can I start with a smaller kit and expand it later?

Often, yes. Many of the inverter and battery platforms in these kits support additional panels or extra batteries later. Check the product page for the inverter's maximum PV input and the battery's expansion limit before you buy, and size those two components for where you want to end up.
