1,000A for five seconds is roughly equivalent to a 1,000 CCA lead-acid starting battery, which covers most outboards and many inboard gas engines. Engines vary, though, and cold starting is harder than warm. Tell us your engine on (303) 876-7654 and we'll check its cranking requirement against that figure rather than leaving you to hope.
Can one battery really do both jobs?
For a lot of boats, yes — that's the point of a dual-purpose design. Where it doesn't work is if your house loads are heavy enough to draw the battery down below starting voltage. If you run a big inverter, multiple livewell pumps and electronics all day at anchor, a separate starting battery and house bank is safer. If you're running electronics, lights and pumps on a day's fishing, one of these is plenty.
How does it compare with the Pro Series 300Ah, which also cranks?
The Pro Series 300Ah gives you 300Ah rather than 172Ah, 6,000 cycles rather than 4,000, IP67 rather than IP65, and CANbus communications — in a Group 8D case at 81 lbs. This is a Group 31 at 40 lbs and a much lower price. Buy on whether you have the space and need the capacity.
Why doesn't it have internal heating?
It's an Essential Series battery, and heating is reserved for the higher models in that line. The practical consequence is that charging needs 23°F or above. It has low-temperature charge protection, so it protects itself rather than accepting a damaging charge. For most boating seasons that's a non-issue; for winter use in a cold climate, a heated model is the better choice.
Can I wire two together?
In parallel, yes — up to four, which doubles or quadruples your capacity while keeping 12V. Series wiring is explicitly not approved for this battery, so it cannot be used to build a 24V or 36V bank.
Does the Bluetooth app help in practice?
More than you'd expect. Knowing the actual state of charge before you leave the dock is the difference between confidence and guesswork — voltage alone tells you very little about a lithium battery, because the voltage curve is so flat. The app gives you the BMS's own figure.
Why lithium iron phosphate rather than lead-acid?
You can use nearly all of the rated capacity rather than half, so a 100Ah LFP battery does the work of a 200Ah lead-acid one. It weighs roughly a third as much for the same usable energy. And it lasts thousands of cycles instead of a few hundred, so the cost per useful cycle is dramatically lower despite the higher purchase price.
Do I need a lithium-specific charger?
Yes. A lead-acid charger's absorption and float voltages are wrong for LFP — it will either leave the battery short of full or hold it at a voltage that shortens its life. Any charger with a LiFePO4 profile works, and we stock Epoch's own matched chargers in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V.
What is the recommended charge current?
Epoch recommends charging at 50% of the battery or bank capacity — so about 86A for a single battery, though the BMS permits up to 200A. Most marine charging sources deliver well below that anyway. A lithium-profile charger will handle it correctly.
